Silhouettes: The perfect unusual, historical, holiday gift!
The Museum is excited to welcome back Silhouettes by Chris. Chris, a second generation, internationally known, professional silhouette artist cuts the silhouettes freehand. It is amazing to watch. He just uses surgical scissors and fine paper — no tracing, painting, or mechanical aids. On average, it only takes him 2-3 minutes to hand-cut an heirloom quality, detailed silhouette. These can be of adults, children and even pets.
The children do not have to sit still. They can wiggle and laugh — it's supposed to be fun. The silhouettes are then mounted and/or framed.
The fully finished portraits are ready in just minutes. In order to include children who can't be there that day, older siblings, and even couples, parents or pets, Chris can work from side-view photos.

Silhouette portraiture is a historic art form, in which a person's profile (or side-view) is hand-cut from black paper and mounted on a white background. Traditionally, they are placed in black oval frames. They are often referred to as "shadow pictures" or "shades." In a time without cameras, it was an economical alternative to a painted portrait or miniature. There are fewer than 50 professional silhouette artists currently practicing, with most operating solely online.
