Museum hosts "Show Me Fridays" for kids

Show Me Fridays

The Dunn County Historical Society will host Show Me Fridays kids programming on six consecutive Fridays in June and July.

These fun, interactive programs geared toward fourth and fifth graders, run from June 16 to July 21 at the Russell J. Rassbach Heritage Museum in Menomonie’s Wakanda Park. Older or younger children may participate at the discretion of the parents.

Drop-off and registration for each event begins at 8:45 a.m. and sessions run from at 9 am to noon, lunch included. Registration is $5 per session, or $20 for all six. Special arrangements can be made to pick up your child earlier if needed.

This year Show Me Fridays explores the animal kingdom, from flying creatures to bugs to heptiles, including animals in folklore. Each session includes activities, presentations and gifts for children to take home.

Session topics are as follows:

Session #1 – Honeybees and Beekeeping
Elk Mound beekeeper Veronica Knudsen will share her experiences as a novice beekeeper and give an overview of the life of the honeybee and the equipment she uses. Participants may sample honey from Knudsen’s hives. Activities will include creating a beeswax candle..

Session #2 – Animal Folklore
Wisconsin folklore includes many tales of different animal-related beings such as the Hodag and Bigfoot. Children will see cartoon creations by a local author exploring these tales. A visit to the nearby game park will provide children with ideas to create their own folklore animal. Activities will include drawing, folklore creation and identifying animal tracks.

Session #3 – Dress as a Butterfly
Ruth Forsgren of Beaver Creek Reserve will lead lthis session on butterflies. Children will learn the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, turning one child into a monarch. Activities will include butterfly gardening and growing caterpillars into butterflies..

Session #4 – Worldwide Insect Road Show
John Hempel will exhibit and interpret trunk loads of valuable insect specimens. Explore the wonderful world of bugs and meet insects not found in Wisconsin -- this is a must-see collection! Activities include a bug dig kit, bug mazes, and the opportunity to taste a dried cricket and/or grasshopper.

Session #5 – Red Cedar Trail Field Trip
Children will travel to the Red Cedar State Trail visitor center where they will learn about the trail, wildlife of Wisconsin, and view exhibits in this former railroad depot. On a stroll down the trail they will learn about the men and women who rode the rails 100 years ago. Activities include dissecting an owl pellet. Bus will return to the museum at noon.

Session 6 – Herptiles
Jim Schweibert of Beaver Creek Reserve will introduce children to herptiles, a class that includes amphibians and reptiles. Schweibert will bring some friends including toads, snakes and frogs. Activities will include painting a frog pet rock.
